Casasco

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 124 · Postal code: 15050

Casasco, Casasch in the Tortona dialect, sits on a ridge dividing the Curone and Grue valleys, and for centuries its history followed that of the Grue. In the Middle Ages it belonged first to the county and then to the bishopric of Tortona, and only later passed in fief to Genoese families. In the late fifteenth century Piero Ceraglio da Casasco made a name for himself in the Curone valley as a bandit, raiding the large landowners round about.

The municipal arms tell the village in pieces: a gold capital C on red, a red bunch of grapes on a green-leafed vine, and a bendy of gold and black taken from the blazon of the noble Bussetti family. The church of Saint Stephen was rebuilt in the course of the eighteenth century.
