Tassarolo

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 636 · Postal code: 15060

Tassarolo sits on the last hills of the Ligurian Apennines. In the eleventh century it had a Benedictine monastery under a distant abbey, Santa Maria di Castiglione, on the plain near Fidenza. From 1367 it belonged to the Spinola di Luccoli and became an imperial fief and county. An old dolcetto called nibiò survives in a few plots between Tassarolo and Novi Ligure.

The parish church of San Nicolao has a yellow front with white pilasters and two painted panels, in the pediment a blessing figure among clouds, below a bishop with mitre and crozier beside a tub with three children. A line of Latin over the door asks the saint for protection.
