Feast of the Nativity of Mary
📅 Every year, on 8 September
On 8 September Canosio, a municipality of 82 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates the Nativity of Mary.
Canosio, Chanuelhas in Occitan, is an Occitan-speaking village of the Maira valley; its only hamlet, Preit, gives its name to the side valley up which an old military road climbs to the Gardetta plateau. The plateau is Italian geological heritage for its rock exposures, and on those tilted, fast-eroding beds a reptile's footprints came to light.
The tracks are about 250 million years old, from the start of the Triassic, and belong to an archosauriform, from the reptile stock that preceded the dinosaurs; palaeontologists judged them a new form and named it Isochirotherium gardettensis after the plateau. The municipal arms partly repeat those of the Alessi of Carrù, counts of Canosio from 1819: the crowned silver eagle, the silver tower with Guelph merlons and the chequy of red and silver.
