Carrù stands at the start of the Langa, so much so that they call it the gate of the Langa. On the evening of 23 April 1796 Napoleon came through on his way down into Italy: his troops slept on the Preosa hill, he in the town, in a house on what is now via Mazzini, and before leaving he laid on the citizens a tax of over sixty thousand lire to be paid to his soldiers.

It was not the only time the town paid for armies passing through: French, Spanish and then Austro-Russian forces had themselves supplied and taxed it for more than a century. Here, on 24 March 1874, Luigi Einaudi was born, whom parliament elected in 1948 as the first president of the Italian Republic.
