Marmora

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 74 · Postal code: 12020

At Marmora the town hall stands in the hamlet of Vernetti, and the rest of the municipality lies scattered over the slopes of the Maira valley in some fifteen hamlets — Reinero, Tolosano, Torello, Urzio, Arata, Ponte Marmora —, in Occitan-speaking country, where the name is La Marmol. A chapel at San Sebastiano keeps frescoes painted around 1450 by Giovanni Baleison of Demonte: beside scenes from the life of Christ and of the patron saint come episodes from the apocryphal gospels, the midwife Zachele and the miracle of the growing wheat, said to have happened during the flight into Egypt.

The arms are quartered: the letter M, a crowned double-headed eagle, a silver sheep on green ground and a blue lion. Eagle and lion come from the arms of the La Marmora of Biella, a family whose fortunes joined the village in 1610, when Charles Emmanuel I made the four sons of Gian Giorgio Ferrero counts of Marmora and Canosio; the council asked their descendants' permission before taking them.
