International White Truffle Fair
📅 October-December, weekends
The world capital of truffle celebrates its king.
Piedmontese call it la Granda, the big one, and the name is earned: Cuneo has 247 municipalities, more than any other Italian province bar one, and only Bolzano and Foggia cover more ground. Set up in 1859, it fills the south-west corner of the region and borders France directly, as well as Liguria to the south. Half of it is mountain, a quarter hills, the rest flat — the range of altitude inside one province is unusual.
The capital, Cuneo, has 55,000 residents, but it is not where most visitors head first. Alba comes ahead of it, with its cathedral and the Federico Eusebio archaeology museum, followed by Bra, then Saluzzo and Mondovì. None of these towns passes 31,000 people and they sit close together, which argues for two or three bases rather than one.
