Granozzo con Monticello

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,432 · Postal code: 28060

The name probably comes from the wheat this plain has always given, and the coat of arms agrees: among ears of wheat and rice and cobs of maize sits a silver wheel of gorgonzola. The first written trace is a person, not a castle: one Johannes de Granocio, a witness around 829 in a Novara deed. The Vatican map of the Duchy of Milan of 1581 sets the village beside Monticello, garbled into Moricella.

At Monticello the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio stands on the hilltop, up an old stone stair; in the fourteenth century it is already a pieve, though the present building, with statues on the front, dates from 1608.
