Nibbiola

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 792 · Postal code: 28070

Nibbiola first appears in a charter from the archive of Novara cathedral, dated March 902. The village sits on a fluvioglacial terrace some ten metres above the plain, and on the Montarsello estate amphorae, coins, cups and glass balsamaria have come to light, the remains of a small Roman necropolis.

The castle is recorded in a parchment of 1198, when the consuls ran the village. It is built of bare brick, with two corner towers and a third guarding the entrance, and it keeps one of the few drawbridges still in working order; of the moat only traces survive at the foot of the facade. On the slopes the vine has given way to rice.
