Vinzaglio

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 588 · Postal code: 28060

Vinzaglio lies in the plain between Novara and Vercelli, near the Sesia, yet for centuries it looked elsewhere: from the fourteenth century it belonged to the county of Vigevano, confirmed in the sixteenth by Francesco II Sforza. On the map of the Duchy of Milan of 1581 in the Vatican Gallery of Maps the village is written Vinzal.

That tie with the Lomellina, kept until the eighteenth century, still shows in the roads: the road to Casalino, its only neighbour in the province, leaves the Novarese for a few hundred metres and crosses Confienza. In 1859 Franco-Piedmontese troops fought the Austrians here; a small monumental ossuary holds the fallen.
