Lesa

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,236 · Postal code: 28040

In 1232 Lesa had a harbour and the right to hold a market; in 1312 the market was taken away after a quarrel with Arona, which had one of its own. And until 1947 the village did not exist on its own: it was joined to Belgirate in a single comune called Lesa Belgirate, and only the year after did each take its own name back.

On the lakefront stands villa Stampa, which belonged to Alessandro Manzoni's second wife, Teresa Borri: he stayed there at length and went from it to see Antonio Rosmini, who lived at Stresa. At Solcio, the little church of Sant'Antonio has two votive windows beside the door: they were there so people could look in and pray at any hour.
