Saint George, patron of the land of the Sass dal Pizz
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of May
Nebbiuno celebrates Saint George on the first Sunday of May.
The name Nebbiuno comes from Nebionus, perhaps from nebbia, fog, more likely from nibbio, the kite on the town's arms: a golden bird with open wings on the battlements of a red tower, with six silver stars set in a half-circle. The plague of 1630 left the community with four survivors, probably all from one family, the Fassi.
The parish church of San Giorgio, of Lombard origin as finds confirm, faces the town hall; its bell tower was added in 1775. Above Campiglia stands the Roccolo, the hill where birds were caught and where Queen Margherita, a keen ornithologist, came on holiday to add to her collection.
