Massino Visconti

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,111 · Postal code: 28040

Massino first appears in 865, when count Ermenulfo asked the emperor, through the empress Angelberga, to confirm the monastery there. The rest of the name is recent: Visconti was added in 1943, for the family that held the fief from the Middle Ages nearly to the end of the eighteenth century.

San Michele served as the parish church until 1585, when a landslip wrecked it and left the bell tower with the lean it still has. The tower is older than the church now standing: bare stone over six floors, narrow single-light windows, a clock face high up, and below, from the hill, Lago Maggiore.
