Robbio lies in the Lomellina, province of Pavia, and its name is an old one: Pliny the Elder records a Roman centre here called Redobium, a word linked to the Campi Raudii, where Marius beat the Cimbri and Teutons, and to the form Raudobium; a farmstead in the fields is still called Campo Mario. On the Duchy of Milan map painted in 1581 in the Vatican gallery of maps, the town appears as Rubio.

In the late eleventh century the monastery of San Valeriano passed from a local Lombard family to a priest, Pietro known as Donadio, who gave it to Cluny on condition the monks cared for it; they stayed until the late fourteenth century, making it the second house of the Lomellina after Lomello. Some sources have robiola take its name from Robbio, where it was already made in the sixteenth century; others tie it to the reddish rind. An elm planted in 1768 stood before the parish church, last of a row: a fungus doomed it, it was felled in 1983 and pieces of the trunk went to institutions and townspeople. Silvio Piola, still Serie A's top scorer, was born here.
