On 15 August Prarolo, a municipality of 672 inhabitants in the province of Vercelli, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Until Napoleon liquidated the abbeys' property, Prarolo belonged to the abbey of Santo Stefano in Vercelli: the church of the Assumption was built in 1628, commissioned by cardinal Federico Borromeo, its commendatory abbot, and a chapel to saints Paul and Gratus went up the same year.
The castle stands in the middle of the village, attested from 1398 and probably older, with two round corner towers and a separate square one that guarded the entrance and its drawbridge; parts of it are still visible. War touched it once only, in 1859, on the eve of the battle of Palestro. The arms carry a gold rice plant and a band of water.
