Caprie

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,116 · Postal code: 10040

Until December 1936 the place was called Chiavrie. The fascist regime italianised the name, finding it too close to the Piedmontese form — and in Piedmontese it is still Ciàvrie.

The commune lies in the lower Val di Susa, its centre on the valley floor and the hamlets of Celle, Campambiardo and Peroldrado halfway up the left-hand slope. The left-bank variant of the via Francigena passes through, on the Mont Cenis and Montgenèvre branches. At Celle, where the Romanesque parish church keeps an old crypt, legend has it that the hermit saint Giovanni Vincenzo lived, the founder of the Sacra di San Michele.
