Chiusa di San Michele

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,691 · Postal code: 10050

The old name was Clausae Longobardorum, the Lombard barriers: the valley of Susa narrows here, and along this line ran the defences that held the Lombard kingdom against the Franks — tradition says Charlemagne went round them. The coat of arms repeats it with a curtain wall and a barred gate, and adds a gold star from the emblem of the Sacra di San Michele.

The parish church of San Pietro Apostolo closes the village on the wood side, two orders of pilasters and statues in the niches. On the forecourt, below the steps, a stone fountain dated 1722; from there path 503 climbs to the Sacra, on top of Monte Pirchiriano at 962 metres.
