Bognanco

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 230 · Postal code: 28842

The municipality in its present form dates from 7 January 1928, when three separate comuni were abolished and merged: Bognanco Dentro, also called San Lorenzo, Bognanco Fuori and Monte Ossolano; in 1959 Monte Ossolano was detached again and joined to Domodossola. San Lorenzo is the seat, with the town hall and the parish church, while the name comes from the Bogna, the stream running through the hamlet of Fonti. The arms show a crowned black eagle above a tower with Ghibelline battlements.

Three springs rise at Fonti, Ausonia, Gaudenziana and San Lorenzo, used for treatment and bottled as mineral water, with the spa and its park beside the plant. The Stockalperweg crosses the area too, the mule track ordered around 1630 by Baron Stockalper to link Switzerland with Italy and help trade; it can still be walked.
