Montescheno

Montescheno, Muntaschéi in the local dialect, lies in the Valle Antrona, split into twelve hamlets on the slope, from Barboniga to Zonca. From here starts the Autani dei sette fratelli, one of the longest and probably oldest processions in the Alps: it is thought to predate the plague of 1640. Autani is likely a dialect contraction of litanie, litanies; legend says the first to walk it were seven brothers, doing penance.

The route is a ring between Valle Antrona and Val Bognanco, climbing 1700 metres: walkers leave at first light, cross the high pastures singing in Latin and return late at night. The priest blesses the ground seven times, against drought, floods and avalanches.
