Beura-Cardezza

Province: Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,437 · Postal code: 28851

Beura and Cardezza were separate comuni until 1928, when a royal decree gathered them under one name; in the Ossola dialect they are still two villages, Bèura and Cardescia. The land climbs from the valley floor into the Val Grande national park, where three mountain huts shelter walkers.

At Beura the parish church of San Giorgio faces the square behind a portico of three arches on stone columns, roofed with the same stone slabs as the houses around. Above, the gable front stays plain, with a barred window and an iron cross at the ridge. To one side a stone trough and a pollarded plane tree; behind, the wooded slope.
