Vocca

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 162 · Postal code: 13020

Vocca lies in the northern Valsesia, just above Varallo, spread over seven hamlets between about 490 metres on the valley floor and 1827 metres at the highest point. The name may come from Ovago, meaning north: their exposure leaves some hamlets without sun for two months a year. Others point instead to the sheep flocks, or to terraces once planted with vines.

The arms repeat that geography: Saint Maurice on horseback before a chain of seven peaks, and in the chief seven gold stars, one per hamlet. The parish church was rebuilt in the later eighteenth century on the site of the old one, along the royal road from Varallo to the upper valley; its bell tower is still the earlier one, because the new tower was designed and never built. At Mogliane they worked lime-wood shavings into baskets, gerle and Valsesian cradles.
