Cravagliana

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 278 · Postal code: 13020

Cravagliana lies in the val Mastallone, a side valley of the Valsesia, and it is not one village but some twenty small settlements scattered over both slopes, from Bocciolaro to Brugaro, from Nosuggio to Sassello; one or two have almost emptied, like Meula, still reached by mule track. The coat of arms portrays that geography: on a sky-blue field a brick bridge crosses a stream rising from the point of the shield, between two green valley walls, with a gold five-pointed star above.

For so small a place, Cravagliana gave Piedmont two considerable names. Giovanni Battista Lorenzo Bogino, born here in 1701, became first secretary of war and then minister of state to Charles Emmanuel III; as minister for Sardinian affairs he reformed the island from its prisons to its universities, and ended up effectively heading the Savoyard government. From the hamlet of Brugaro came the sculptor Giacomo Ginotti, who left for France as a boy like many in the valley and returned to study at the Accademia Albertina; his Schiava was bought by Victor Emmanuel II. The family of the poet Giuseppe Regaldi also came from here.
