Few Italian provinces change altitude the way this one does. It starts in the flat rice country around Vercelli, the provincial capital, and ends at Alagna Valsesia, the single municipality through which the province touches Switzerland. In between are 82 towns and villages in Piedmont, and a border that runs alongside the Aosta Valley, Biella, Turin, Novara and Lombardy.

Visitors tend to pick one of two routes. One stays on the plain, between Vercelli, Santhià and Trino, where the paddy fields are the landscape rather than a detail of it — this is one of Italy's great rice-growing areas. The other follows the river Sesia upstream through Gattinara, Borgosesia and Varallo, and keeps going to Alagna Valsesia, high in the Alps.
