Balmuccia

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 94 · Postal code: 13020

Balmuccia owes its name to a small balma, a shallow cavity: the village sits wedged where the Sermenza meets the Sesia, between mountains that seem to smother it. Its coat of arms says the same, a stream rising from red sunlit peaks and a grey stone bridge joining the two sides of the gorge. Mantle peridotites surface in the rock here, brought up with the fossil supervolcano of Valsesia, which exploded some three hundred million years ago.

Until 1584 Balmuccia belonged to the parish of Scopa, and in that year it broke away. A village of a few houses then built itself a theatre: in 1877 the society of the Dilettanti filodrammatici was founded and sold shares to pay for the work, and two years later the Teatro Sociale opened. It closed at the end of the sixties and reopened in 2008 after restoration.
