Saint Amator, patron of the Caracciolo Castle
📅 Every year, on 30 April
Cellamare celebrates Saint Amator on 30 April.
The name, they say, was Cella Amoris, and became Cella Amaris, bitter cell, when the archbishop of Bari, after William the Bad had destroyed the city, took refuge here with his following: the change of one vowel to say the grief of the exiles. The village appears under its present name in a statute of the archdiocese of 1171. On the coat of arms, in a comune with no sea, there is a mermaid rising from the waves.
In 988 the Saracens put the country around Bari to fire and sword and destroyed Ceglie and Valenzano, but at Capurso they were driven back and killed by the men of Capurso and Cellamare: that stretch is still called Massaracina, from the massacre. The patron comes from far away: Saint Amator was from Tucci, in Andalusia, a martyr at Cordoba; his relic arrived here around 1670, by way of a pope and a duke.
