Since 2015 it has been the Metropolitan City of Bari rather than a province: 41 municipalities in Apulia, facing the Adriatic on one side and leaning on Basilicata on the other, still carrying the arms of the old Terra di Bari.
Bari itself is a walking city: the Basilica of San Nicola, the old town, the lane where orecchiette are shaped in the doorways. Beyond it the choice is coast or inland. South along the sea are Polignano a Mare and Monopoli; inland, the cone-roofed trulli of Alberobello and the caves at Castellana Grotte. Further west, near the Basilicata line, sit Altamura and Gravina in Puglia.
