Biccari

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 2,872 · Postal code: 71032

The highest peak in Puglia is in the territory of Biccari: Monte Cornacchia, one thousand one hundred and fifty-one metres. A little lower, above seven hundred metres, the highest Neolithic settlement in the region has been found. The village itself, though, was born of the Byzantines, around the cylindrical tower that guarded the via Traiana, and the name Vicari appears in a deed of August 1054.

After the Normans, a certain Pagano took Biccari and wanted to make it a town with a bishop of his own: he put on the seat a priest named Benedict, whom Pope Alexander II deposed with a bull of 1067. From Biccari came also the DePalma brothers: Ralph, born in 1882, became one of the strongest racing drivers in America.
