Alberona

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 1,002 · Postal code: 71031

Alberona is known as the village of water, for the springs it has. Its chief monument is the Prior's Tower, which belonged to the Templars: when the order was suppressed, in 1312, the fief passed to the Knights Hospitaller, later of Malta, and the tower became the residence of the Grand Prior of Barletta when he came up here. The knights held Alberona until 1806; since 2002 the tower has been the seat of Italia Nostra.

In 1220 Frederick II, who had settled a Muslim colony at Lucera, granted them wide rights of woodcutting in the forests of Alberona. Much later came the plague: between 9 August and 10 November 1656, 384 people died, buried in the pits of the four churches of the time and in the ground before the parish church.
