Isole Tremiti

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 455 · Postal code: 71051

The Tremiti are the only island municipality in Apulia and the northernmost in the region: four islands and two rocks, with the town hall on San Nicola and almost all the inhabitants on San Domino. Pianosa, a rocky tableland, lies some twenty kilometres further off and is so low that heavy seas wash over it. The islands are also called the Diomedeans, after the Cory's shearwaters that nest here: legend says they are the companions of Diomedes, turned into birds and condemned to mourn their leader, buried on the islands.

For centuries the Tremiti were a place where people were sent to disappear. Augustus banished his granddaughter Julia here, and she stayed twenty years and died here. In 780 Charlemagne exiled Paul the Deacon to the islands, but he managed to escape. On San Nicola stands the abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, so imposing that an art historian compared it to Montecassino.
