Rodi Garganico

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,663 · Postal code: 71012

Below the castle the walls of the old port can still be seen, which people have gradually turned into houses. There a hatch cut in the rock led to a room whose lintel carried the word Tabularium, archive: the port's trade was probably recorded there. Pliny names a Portus Garnae, and historians identify it with this one.

The town has lived on citrus since the Middle Ages: the oranges of the Gargano and the Femminello lemons. And since the sixteen hundreds the people of Rodi have been in the front row at the February procession towards Vico del Gargano, for the feast of Saint Valentine, who here is the protector of citrus groves: the plants and the fruit are taken to be blessed. Until 1863 the town was called simply Rodi.
