Feast of the Madonna della Misericordia
📅 Every year, on 12 September
On 12 September Zapponeta celebrates the Madonna della Misericordia; the village faces the Gulf of Manfredonia, a stretch of coast once watched over by the Torre di Rivoli.
Zapponeta began as a piece of a great estate: baron Zezza of Cerignola, who had bought it, had the first houses for the labourers and the church of San Michele Arcangelo built here in 1768. Before that it was a «mezzana» of Barletta, sold in the seventeenth century to mend the city's accounts; the name comes from the Latin sappinus, the pine that grew on the dune.
From 1812 it was a hamlet of Manfredonia, and only in 1975 did it become a municipality: one of the youngest in Italy. In the coat of arms there are a field of wheat and a mallard in flight: the country grows potatoes, onions and carrots recognised as traditional produce, and the coast lies between the Lago Salso wetland and the saltpans of Margherita di Savoia. The sand of the beach is dark, from iron minerals.
