Here on 14 October 1892 was born Giuseppe Di Vittorio, the farm labourer who became Italy's most beloved trade unionist: his house-museum and the square bearing his name tell a story of redemption that is Cerignola's very identity. A town of the Tavoliere and its great estates, it is now an agricultural capital: its "bella di Cerignola" olive, huge and sweet, reaches tables across the world.
The Tonti cathedral, with its imposing late-nineteenth-century dome, commands the plain. And in its countryside was fought, in 1503, the battle of Cerignola — the first won, the manuals say, with portable firearms.
