On the arms there is a sheaf of seven ears of wheat, and seven because — so the official explanation goes — the people here are so tireless that they work all seven days of the week. The name is the patron's: Saint Andrew, protector of fishermen, since fishing was what they lived on; from Andreano, losing an e, came Andrano.

The church of San Domenico stands over a building the Saraceno family raised in 1486 to receive one of their own, killed by the Turks at the siege of Otranto and buried here. On the high altar a fifteenth-century fresco shows the Madonna delle Grazie pushing back the Saracen attack: the family's name and the enemy's are the same word. Not far off, in a natural crypt, there are faint fourteenth-century frescoes and a Templar cross scratched into the stone.
