Diso

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,073 · Postal code: 73030

The name would come from the Messapian Dizos, fortified town; others prefer to derive it from disìo, the desire to live there. In 1806 Diso became the seat of a municipality with five hamlets: Marittima, Castro, Andrano, Castiglione and Vignacastrisi. Three it lost at once, three years later; the other two grew larger than it did.

So the seat had to hand over to its own villages the middle school, the registry office, the pharmacies, until in 1977 Castro too went off on its own, and today the municipality is Diso with Marittima alone. The church of Saints Philip and James, rebuilt in 1758 by the Preite masters of Copertino, lost its bell tower in the hurricane of 10 September 1832: the present one, twenty-five metres high, is from the twentieth century.
