Outside the town stands a vallonea oak seven centuries old, one of the oldest trees in Italy: the story goes that Frederick II sheltered a hundred knights under its crown, and that is what they have called it ever since. In all western Europe, vallonea oaks grow only here and in the Balkans.
The name comes from three hamlets that merged between the tenth and eleventh centuries — which ones exactly, historians have never agreed. The palace of the Gallone princes, who held Tricase until 1806, stands in the centre; the last princess died in 1982. On the coast, eight kilometres of rocks and caves between Tricase Porto and Marina Serra. There are 17,665 residents.
