The Ionian coastline, featuring the distinctive stretches of La Reggia and Montagna Spaccata, forms the maritime boundary of Galatone. Home to 15,754 residents, this Salento municipality originated as a fortified Byzantine kàstron. By the Norman-Swabian era, it had expanded to administer a network of feudal hamlets, including Corillo and Fulcignano.
Hellenic roots run deep in this former agricultural hub. The Byzantine Catholic rite and Greek language persisted well past the 15th century, with the Griko dialect still spoken today. The town is historically significant as the birthplace of Antonio De Ferrariis, widely known as "Il Galateo," southern Italy’s leading humanist.
