In the pinewood on the dunes grows the oldest Aleppo pine in Europe: it stands inside the Stornara reserve, seven kilometres of wood along the Ionian coast named after the migrating starlings. In April 1967 Salvatore Quasimodo stopped here to look at the landscape.
The land is cut by the lame, the karst channels that run down to the sea, and to the north-west opens the gravina of Lamaderchia: forty metres deep, a kilometre long. Around the year 1100 there were thirty salt pans on the river Lato, given to a Byzantine abbey; today citrus groves stand in their place, so much so that Palagiano calls itself the city of clementines. There are 16,052 residents.
