Massafra is cut in two by ravines that are cathedrals of rock: in their walls, dozens of frescoed rock churches — San Marco, the Candelora, San Leonardo — earned the town the title of "Thebaid of Italy", such was its density of Byzantine hermits and monks. The sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala descends into the ravine by a theatrical double ramp.
The legendary "pharmacy of the wizard Greguro", a cave of medicinal herbs, adds mystery. The castle and the carnival, among Puglia's liveliest, complete the western gate of the land of two seas.
