Stornara

Province: Foggia · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,306 · Postal code: 71047

The town was born of a king's experiment: in 1774 Ferdinand IV settled families of colonists on the lands confiscated from the Jesuits, and out of that operation came five new villages, this one among them. The name, instead, is a bird's: the starling that sweeps over the wheat fields in autumn when the ground is being made ready for sowing, which the old arms set on a battlemented tower.

During the war the Americans built a bomber field here, with a runway of pierced steel plank and a steel control tower: B-24s flew from it until 1945, and today that ground is farmland again. In recent years the walls of the village have filled instead with murals painted by artists from half the world, more than a hundred of them, and people come on purpose to see them.
