Ussassai

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 599 · Postal code: 08040

The railway crosses the territory, but the station of Ussassai stands nine kilometres from the village: the Trenino Verde, which since 1997 has run only as a tourist service, passes among the Tacchi, the limestone outcrops that make this piece of Ogliastra so steep. The village lies at seven hundred metres on the slopes of monte Arcuerì.

Outside the houses stands the country church of the Santissimo Salvatore, Romanesque-Byzantine of the twelfth century, and around it the cumbessias, the little stone houses where people sleep during the feast. There are two of them, a fortnight apart: the Saviour on 12 September and Saint Jerome on the 30th. The fief, taken into the duchy of Mandas in 1604, was redeemed in 1839.
