Osini

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 811 · Postal code: 08040

In November 1951 a flood destroyed the village, and Osini was rebuilt a kilometre further off. The new village is made almost entirely of small blocks divided into flats, because people needed a roof in a hurry. Of the old one there remain the sixteenth-century church of Santa Susanna, still in use, the presbytery, a few houses put back on their feet, and a great many ruins.

Above the village opens the Scala di San Giorgio. A life of the saint written in 1117 tells that the bishop, coming to the foot of an impassable mountain and thinking of the hardship of poor travellers, prayed, and a narrow passage opened in the rock; then he made a spring rise beside it as well. People live long here: between 2024 and 2025, among fewer than seven hundred inhabitants, there were eight centenarians.
