Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Nurachi, a municipality of 1,790 inhabitants in the province of Oristano, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
For nineteen years this village did not exist as a comune. From 1927 to 1946 it was united to Riola Sardo, and to count itself on its own again it had to wait for the end of the war. That is not the only address it has changed: until the sixteenth of July 1974, the day the province of Oristano was created, it belonged to the province of Cagliari. So a village of a little under two thousand people has been, within a century, first a piece of another comune and then a piece of another province, while standing still where it was. Where it is, precisely, is worth saying: in the Campidano of Oristano, with its territory reaching into the Sinis peninsula as far as the pond of Cabras.
Underneath, the land has been inhabited far longer. In the territory one can make out the circular and elliptical huts of an Eneolithic village of the third millennium before Christ, besides a few nuraghi. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the giudicato of Arborea and lay in the curatoria of the Campidano of Oristano; when the giudicato fell it passed to the marquisate of Oristano, and after the final defeat of the Arboreans, in 1478, it came under the Aragonese as a royal fief. In the eighteenth century it was incorporated into the marquisate of Arcais, fief of the Flores Nurra, and was redeemed from them in 1839 with the abolition of the feudal system. Since then the economy has remained almost entirely agricultural, and the language spoken is the Campidanese Sardinian of Oristano in its northern variety.
