In the nineteen seventies, during a chance dig, enormous statues began to come out of the ground at Monte Prama: they are dated to the first half of the first millennium before Christ and since 2014 they have stood in the town's archaeological museum. Before them, around the eighth century before Christ, the Phoenicians had founded on the Sinis the city of Tharros, on a site the nuragic people already used, and Tharros lived on without a break through the Carthaginian and then the Roman age. Cabras, on the other hand, appears only in the eleventh century, when Tharros emptied for good, partly because of the raids of North African pirates, and its people moved inland, gathering around a castle of which a few fragments survive beside the parish church. Seventy-five nuraghes have been counted in the territory.

On the first weekend of September some eight hundred men in the white habit of penitents carry the image of San Salvatore from Cabras to the village of the same name, seven kilometres along the dusty roads of the Sinis: barefoot and at a run, in a set order. It is the memory of the day the statue was saved from a Saracen attack on the shores of the gulf of Oristano, and the next day it is brought back the same way. The rest of the year the town lives off its lagoon, one of the largest in Europe, where the fishermen's cooperatives take mullet, and off what is made from their roe: bottarga.

Our Lady of the Assumption, patron with the procession of San Salvatore

📅 Every year, on 24 May; the first week of September the procession of San Salvatore

Cabras celebrates Our Lady of the Assumption on 24 May. One of the most evocative traditions involving the whole community is linked to the procession of San Salvatore, held during the first weekend of September and consisting of a reenactment of the rescue of the saint's statue.
