Feast of Saint Constantine the Emperor
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Siamaggiore, a municipality of 970 inhabitants in the province of Oristano, celebrates its patron Saint Constantine the Emperor, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Siamaggiore is one of only two comuni in Sardinia to have a man fallen in the Crimean War; the other is Borore. The soldier was called Antonio Olias, and his is a death that stands on a very short list for a whole island. The village, small today, once counted for much more: in the dictionary of Angius one reads that Sia-Majore was most ancient and that, in the time of the kingdom of Arborea, it was prosperous and well peopled, so much so that it deserved to be the chief place of the Campidano — and the Campidano, for that reason, came to be called Majori, whereas at first it was said to be of Sia-majore. Solarussa too, in the same dictionary, is described as part of the campidano of Siamaggiore. On the meaning of the name, however, not everyone agrees: for the most part it is referred to the Via Maior of the Romans.
In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the giudicato of Arborea and was the chief place of the curatoria of the Campidano of Oristano. When the giudicato fell, in 1420, it entered the marquisate of Oristano; with the final defeat of the Arborean side, in 1478, it passed to the Aragonese and became a fief; and around 1767, in the Savoy period, it ended up in the marquisate of Arcais, fief of the Flores Nurra — the same one that nearby Tramatza ended up in — until the redemption of 1839. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Constantine the Great, emperor, and is kept on 23 April; then there are the oratory of the Souls, the church of San Ciriaco, which has its feast on 8 August, and Santa Maria in the hamlet of Pardu Nou.
