On the arms of Tramatza there are canes and a bridge, and they are the two things the village owes to its river. The Cispiri crosses the plain and has always given canes, which throughout Sardinia were known for their toughness; and with its water it turned the wheels of some twenty mills, which are no longer there today. The bridge is the Roman one, of late republican date or of the early empire, which strides over that same stream. All around is the Campidano of Oristano, alluvial land in which basalt formations crop out here and there, the memory of the old volcanic activity of the nearby Montiferru. The parish church is that of Santa Maria Maddalena and goes back to the fourteenth century; in the countryside, at the localities of Serra 'e Muru and Forru Sorighina, there remain Neolithic domus de janas, and the nuraghi all have a name: Mannu, Aurras, Pitzibi, Zuddas, Sant'Uanni.

In the Middle Ages Tramatza lay in the curatoria of the Campidano of Milis, inside the giudicato of Arborea; when that fell, in 1420, it passed to the marquisate of Oristano, and with the final defeat of the Arborean side, in 1478, to the Aragonese, becoming a fief. In the Savoy period, around 1767, it was taken into the marquisate of Arcais, fief of the Flores Nurra, from whom it was redeemed in 1839, when the village at last had a mayor and a council. It did not keep them for good: in the years of fascism the title of comune was taken away, and Tramatza remained in fact a hamlet of Milis until the fifties. Today the people live above all on fields and livestock.
