The name means «wide ford»: it comes from the Latin vadum latum, and the ford will have been that of the rio Cìspiri, which crosses the territory. In the twelfth century the giudici of Arborea gave the village to the Camaldolese of Bonarcado; the Romanesque parish church of San Gregorio is of the century after.
In 1767 Bauladu ended up in the marquisate of Arcais, fief of the Flores Nurra, and bought itself free in 1839. Then, in 1927, it lost its autonomy and became a frazione of Milis: it got it back only in 1946. Here they speak the limba de mesania, the middle tongue, between Campidanese and Logudorese.
