Bottidda

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 736 · Postal code: 07010

Twenty-six nuraghi are counted in this territory, each with its own name, and a giants' tomb; one of them stands on the top of the hill above the village and has given it its name, Sa Corona. At the place called S'Orculana there is a thousand-year-old wild olive: at the base the trunk spreads out for seventeen metres, and the crown reaches eight.

On Monte Rasu rose the first Franciscan convent of the island: tradition has it founded around 1220 by Giovanni Parenti, a disciple of Francis of Assisi. The name of the village comes from far off: it was first Gossilla, or Gocilla, and from Gocilla it went to Gotilla, Botilla, Botidda and at last Bottidda.
