Esporlatu — Isporlatu in Sardinian — lies in the Goceano at 474 metres above sea level, between Bottidda, Burgos and Illorai, in country settled since nuragic times. Within those boundaries stood a second village, Bortiocor, which was even the seat of the curatoria after Anela and which was destroyed in the Aragonese period: nothing is left of it but the name, and of the two only Esporlatu survives.
In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Giudicato of Torres and to the curatoria of the Goceano; when the giudicato fell in 1259 it passed to Arborea, and from 1339 it formed part of the county of the Goceano. Around 1420 the whole county came under the Aragonese and Esporlatu became a royal fief, and so it remained until 1839, when its redemption from the last feudal lords closed the feudal system. The Sardinian spoken here is central Logudorese, the variety islanders call the common one.
