An archipelago of pink granite and atoll waters, protected since 1994 as a national park: La Maddalena is the gateway to sixty-two islands including Budelli with its Pink Beach — now safeguarded, admired from on board — and Caprera, joined by a bridge, where Giuseppe Garibaldi lived as farmer-hero until his death in 1882: his estate-museum is among Sardinia's most visited.
The town, born as a naval base, lives on granite, lanes and harbour cafés. The ritual is the boat tour: coves competing for the names of paradise, the mistral as director.
