In 1962 a consortium led by prince Karim Aga Khan turned a coast of rocks and junipers into the myth of the Costa Smeralda: Porto Cervo, a hamlet of Arzachena, is its capital, a landing of yachts and signature Mediterranean architecture. But the territory is far older than its billionaires.

The giants' tomb of Coddu Vecchiu, the nuraghi and the mushroom-shaped rock in town tell of prehistoric Gallura; the beaches — from Pevero to Cala Battistoni — remain democratically splendid. Vermentino di Gallura in the glass: Sardinia's only DOCG is born among these granites.
