Sant'Antonio di Gallura

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 1,619 · Postal code: 07030

Sant'Antonio di Gallura was born around a church — and that church stood in the territory of another comune, Calangianus. The families scattered through the surrounding countryside moved in and settled about it, and at the beginning of the nineteen fifties the place had about seven hundred and fifty inhabitants. It became a comune in its own right only in 1979, taking with it the small village of Priatu. Its Sardinian name still records where it comes from: in Sardinian the village is called Sant'Antòni de Calanzànos, Saint Anthony of Calangianus.

There was certainly a nuraghe here: at the foot of the granite rise called Lu Naracu one stood, and every trace of it has been lost — but the names have kept it. Lu Nurachéddu is a place in Campu d'idda, Lu Mònti di lu Naràcu is the rise at the edge of the village, and Monti di Lu Naracu is a hill five kilometres away. In via Pergolesi a circular foundation and various finds have come to light, and not far from the centre there is a megalithic wall. The comune stands on a hill of three hundred and fifty-seven metres among deep valleys and oak woods, and takes in the eastern part of the artificial lake of Liscia; it lives on farming, stock-raising and the cutting of cork, and in summer many of its people go to work in the hotels of Arzachena and Olbia. The railway from Sassari to Tempio and Palau crosses the territory and has three installations in it — a station and two halts — but since 1997 no ordinary trains run on it: only the tourist one they call the little green train.
